Typical situations

When a leadership role cannot wait.

01

Vacancy

A lead or head-of role is vacant, but decisions, the team and partners still need direction now.

02

Critical growth phase

Accounts, markets and budgets are growing faster than the structure and responsibilities around them.

03

Transformation or reorganization

Processes, agency setup, tracking or goals are being rebuilt and need experienced ownership.

04

Performance crisis

Results are declining, causes are unclear and the organization needs a calm diagnosis rather than rushed isolated fixes.

05

Planned handover

A new permanent leader needs to inherit a documented setup, understand the decisions and get up to speed.

Areas of responsibility

Leadership with a close view of execution.

I balance leadership and hands-on work deliberately: close enough to the details for sound decisions, without letting unplanned campaign work consume the leadership role.

30 · 60 · 90 days

Get started quickly, without rebuilding prematurely.

The precise timeline depends on the situation and length of the engagement. The sequence remains: understand and stabilize first, make focused changes next, then secure results and a handover.

Days 01–30

Understand and stabilize

Map goals, stakeholders, accounts, data quality, risks and current decisions. Contain urgent problems and agree on priorities.

Days 31–60

Make focused changes

Address the most important structural and operational opportunities, clarify ownership and establish reliable testing and reporting rhythms.

Days 61–90

Secure results and handover

Assess results, document systems, enable the team and prepare the next operating model.

Interim or fractional?

Similar seniority, different starting points.

Interim

A defined role for a limited time

  • Time-limited engagement
  • Often a higher concentration of time
  • An immediate need for ownership
  • A clear handover goal

Fractional

Embedded leadership capacity

  • Usually an ongoing engagement
  • A fixed part-time allocation
  • Continuous senior guidance
  • Longer-term leadership capacity
Explore fractional leadership

The models can overlap. What matters is the objective, responsibility and time frame of the engagement, rather than its label.

Governance

Responsibility needs clear decision rights.

At the outset, we define the remit, contacts, access and communication rhythm. We agree which decisions I make, which I prepare and where management or specialist teams are involved.

Clear ownership. Transparent decisions. A planned handover.

The work should leave the company more capable, both during the engagement and afterwards.

Interim team lead case

Leading and scaling across 6–7 markets.

As an external interim team lead, I led a search advertising team of three to four people and connected operational optimization, budget management and team responsibility. Channel revenue grew by about 20–30% while efficiency stayed largely stable.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about interim leadership.

How soon can you start?

That depends on my current availability and the time required. We discuss urgency and realistic start options in the calculator and video call.

Can you take on formal line management?

That depends on the engagement and its legal and organizational setup. Functional leadership, prioritization, coaching and managing partners can clearly form part of the scope.

Can you also work hands-on in the accounts?

Yes. We define the operational share deliberately, so leadership is not displaced by unplanned campaign work, or vice versa.

What is the difference between interim and fractional?

Interim usually means taking on a specific role for a limited time with a handover goal. Fractional usually means embedded part-time leadership capacity over a longer period. In practice they can overlap.

How does an interim engagement end?

With a planned handover: documented priorities, decision logic, processes, open risks and structured onboarding for whoever takes over.
